Workshops

For the first time, this year most of the workshops have levels (1, 2 or 3). This is because in the past years we experienced a big difference between the levels of the participants. Please notice that the requirements for each level are in the description of each workshop. Also for every workshop is mentioned what instruments can participate. There are no instruments provided, so you have to bring the instrument(s) and everything else you need (sticks, belt) yourself. During the workshops ear protection is recomended. Also don't forget to bring a fitting tuning key for your instrument.

In this workshop, our musical director Chris, who has been writing, playing, teaching and mestreing percussion for over 15 years, will teach you an original CC tune for you to play alongside the brass section and backline, giving you a unique taste of our intense CC flavour!

Cuíca (Meiko Meissner)

While in Europe, very few baterias have cuicaplayers, in Brazil playing samba without cuica is the unthinkable. It’s very distinctive sound adds warmth and organic “crazyness” to the overall sound of a heavily cooking bateria. After hearing a bateria with(!) cuica, most likely one never wants to hear one without(!) it in the future! :-)
Depending on the level of the participants, this workshop will cover:
- introduction to the instrument (if needed)
- basic playing technique (if needed)
- rhythms used
- improvisation (“learning the language”)
This workshop is open to all levels. There will be enough material to learn for beginners, but also for advanced players. Cuica’s can be rented for use during the workshop for €5. You can apply for this when you buy your ticket. Broken gambito’s and / or skins will be charged.

Leading a percussion group (Meiko Meissner)
This workshop is held in round 2.
The right or wrong way leading a percussion group can make or brake not only performances, but also important rehearsals. Body language, the use of the rights signs at the right time, focussing on the important instruments, communicating with the leading repinique are all crucial factors which will have big impact on not only the players but also the audience. We will be looking at how to steer your bateria through a performance successfully, and also provide tips and tricks on how to present and learn new material with your group. We will focus on the directing side as well as your preparation for rehearsals and performances.
This workshop is open for all levels.
